Fern Bisel Peat was born in 1893, died in 1971. She was an artist and illustrator of children's books and magazines. Early in her career she illustrated many children's books. Later, Fern Bisel Peat became the primary artist for Children's Play Mate Magazine.

Her book illustrations are colorful and charming. She frequently used calico or gingham in her images: in some cases I think she may have used actual fabric scraps and drew a picture around them. At other times she carefully painted the fabric patterns into the image.

Fern Bisel Peat's book of Forest Friends has 12 beautiful animal drawings that, in my opinion, are just as attractive as Edward J. Detmold's popular animal illustrations. She also illustrated a Bird Book for children.
